Oral Health Affects Education

How much school do you think children miss every year due to oral health problems?

According to the American Dental Association, kids miss 51 million hours of class time every year as a result of oral health issues.

We think you would agree that being in class gives your children a better chance to succeed in school. That’s why we also want you to know about some data shared by the Children’s Dental Health Project:

■ A recent study found that kids with poor oral health were three times more likely to miss school than kids with healthy mouths.

■ Another study found that nearly a third of missed school days in elementary schools could be attributed to oral health problems.

■ A national study revealed that 1 in 7 kids between the ages of 6 and 12 reported having a toothache in the previous six months.

■ A separate study concluded that kids who reported recent toothaches were four times more likely to have lower grades.

You could look at this information another way, however. By keeping your kids free from cavities and gum disease, they will be more likely to stay in school and more able to keep their focus on their classwork.

What We Can Do For Your Family

As a family dentist office, we want to do everything we can to help your loved ones keep their mouths healthy.

That means we want your kids to practice good oral hygiene daily. This includes brushing (twice a day, two minutes each time), flossing (every day), and eating a healthy, well-balanced diet.

This should also include making professional dental cleanings and exams part of your routine. By visiting us twice a year, we can give you a thorough cleaning to remove any plaque or tartar that you may have missed. We will be on the lookout for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, too. If we find anything, we want to take care of it as soon as possible.

When you are here, we encourage you to consider some of our other services, which can help in the never-ending fight against cavities.

Dental sealants provide added protection by acting as a barrier to protect teeth from bacteria that cause tooth decay. Fluoride treatments can make your teeth stronger by repairing minor damage from those same bacteria and by building up healthy enamel.

As one last note, we also have a recommendation for any athletes in your family. If they are playing a sport that involves running, changes in direction or speed, frequent contact between players, jumping, or flying objects (e.g. soccer balls, volleyballs, etc.), then you should be wearing a mouthguard.

Athletic mouthguards are one of the many services we offer as part of our general dentistry. We would be happy to help your budding stars get one.
