Get Healthy Gums Back With a Deep Cleaning

Periodontal disease isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Gum infections have also been linked to serious health concerns, including heart disease, diabetes complications, and even premature births. To restore gum health, treatment often begins with a two-step deep cleaning process:

  • Scaling – Removes plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, including the areas below your gumline.

  • Root Planing – Smooths the surface of your tooth roots to make it harder for bacteria to collect and easier for your gums to reattach.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of all Americans have some form of gum disease. The good news is that it can often be prevented — and even reversed in early stages — with daily brushing, flossing, and routine professional cleanings and exams.

Know Your Periodontal Symptoms

When harmful bacteria build up beneath your gumline, they cause inflammation and infection. Over time, this can damage your smile and your overall health. Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Bite changes
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait. Contact Weddell Dental for gum disease treatment in Bloomington, MN, before the condition leads to tooth loss or other serious problems.

Common Questions About Gum Disease Treatment

What Is Gum Disease Treatment?
Gum disease treatment is designed to rid your mouth of built-up tartar, plaque, and bacteria that can wreak havoc on your gums. We’ll first use special instruments to clean around and below your gumline where bacteria have collected. Then we’ll smooth your teeth roots to make it harder for bacteria to grow there. This treatment may need to be repeated every few months for best results.
Dr. Weddell and your hygienist will make sure that your gum disease treatment is as comfortable as possible. Before we begin any work, we’ll use a local anesthetic to completely numb the area we’re working on, and you can request light sedation or oral medication if desired. That way you’re assured of a pleasant treatment. In addition, you can ask any questions you want about your treatment, and we’ll answer them fully so you have all the information you need.
In its early stages, there are often no noticeable symptoms of gum disease. That’s why it’s important to visit us every six months for a checkup. As gum disease progresses, you may experience red and puffy gums, tenderness or pain, bleeding gums, bad breath, or loose teeth. Left untreated, gum disease can even cause you to lose your teeth.
