Technology is huge. In the four years that I've been in that practice, I have upgraded a lot of different things. Technology is part of everything we do these days but especially in something technical like dentistry: the computers are enormous, the materials. We can make a crown in one appointment for a patient now. There's just so much more things we can do. Digital X-rays show us way more than they ever used to at a quarter of the radiation dose for patients. It's just a huge, huge difference. That's why it's important to keep learning these materials. Even with all the technology, the important part is to have the compassion and the care to take care of the person. You can't get lost in the technology and forget the person that you're taking care of because that's the important—technology is wonderful and helpful, but you've got to take care of the person that's you're patient.
The tagline on our business cards is “Health and Beauty.” Our dental work is under a lot of functional stress as well as needing to be cosmetic. That's part of why I take so many of these classes, because there was a point earlier in my career where I was good at getting people out of pain in the functional, but I would look at some other dentist's work at some meetings and all, and theirs looked nicer than mine.
We want to take good care of people, make them comfortable, make them have a home where they're comfortable coming, and build a relationship with them and care for them with the best technical skill.

- Completed level III of the esthetic dental continuum at the University of Minnesota (the second dentist to do so)
- Completed the University of Minnesota’s dental implant placement training
- Achieved Master status in the Academy of General Dentistry; only 1 percent of dentists do
We have a comfort menu that we—a little buzz word that we use to call it here but, patients come in the waiting room and it's comfortable in the waiting room. We've got beverage stations so that they can have coffee, hot cocoa, tea—anything like that. We've got a friendly comfortable waiting room there. We've got wireless for them to be comfortable. When they come into the room, we've got blankets if it's cold for you at all, pillows—whatever we can do to make you comfortable in the operatory. We have nitrous oxide; we don't charge extra for it. I just want my patients to be comfortable.
While I'm working on them, I talk to patients. Anytime anything bothers people, we've got a “wave-your-hand”—we stop right away and make sure your comfortable. We take great care with the anesthetic so that patients often don't even realize that—“It's starting to feel numb. How come it's feeling numb when you haven't done that yet?” Well, I did do it. So, we work very hard at making them comfortable doing the dentistry. I don't want them to have a nice looking tooth and go away and say it was the worst experience of their life. I want them to say, “Gosh, this was great. Dr. Weddell is wonderful. You gotta go see my guy.” I mean, we take great care to make sure everybody is comfortable.
If you're afraid to come to the dentist, you should come see us. We're going to take good care of you. We're going to get you comfortable before you even sit in the chair to have dentistry done. We're going to do a complete examination. We're going to check everything out. We're going to discuss what we can do, and we're going to discuss different options on how to get there and what we need to do. We can absolutely make you comfortable. If you've built up a fear for a lot of years, are you going to be comfortable in the first minute? No. We're going to work through it but we're going to work through it with you. We're going to get there so you're comfortable. Would you rather go to the beach? Yeah, I get that, but we're going to make you comfortable so that you can have the work done. We have lots of different ways of getting you there and inching you along and getting the dental work done so that you can be comfortable, smile with confidence, and chew and eat comfortably and enjoy your food.
