Eating fruits and vegetables, especially fresh ones, is good for your body. It’s also great for your teeth! Right now, you’ll still find plenty of choices at local farmers markets, making it especially easy to consume these healthy foods. Still, you’ll want to treat your teeth to fruits and veggies all year.
Luckily, this video has some great tips for getting more of these good-for-your-smile foods into your family’s diet.
Fruits and vegetables contain lots of water, which helps wash away disease-causing bacteria. Plus, chewing on them stimulates saliva production, which washes away food debris and lessens acidity in your mouth. Fruits and veggies that are high in fiber, including carrots, celery, and apples, are especially good choices. The fiber works almost like a natural “toothbrush” to scrub away harmful substances.
Many of these foods also contain minerals and vitamins that are good for teeth. For example, leafy green and cruciferous veggies are full of vitamins A and C, beta carotene, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous.
